SA arrivals to Tasmania must quarantine

Travellers arriving in Tasmania from South Australia must go into mandatory quarantine after the state was reclassified a medium COVID-19 risk because of a cluster in Adelaide.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said the mandatory 14-day quarantine requirement would apply to passengers arriving from SA by air from Monday afternoon, and on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Tuesday.

Travellers will be allowed to self-quarantine if they have a "suitable premises", otherwise there are hotel quarantine places available with expenses to be covered by the state.

The premier confirmed a cohort of seasonal workers who are due to arrive in Tasmania from Adelaide would be required to undergo mandatory quarantine.

He said further announcements were likely on Tuesday as the situation in SA became clearer, with the possibility of a distinction made between Adelaide and the rest of the state.

Around 900 people who have arrived in Tasmania in the past week have been ordered to self-isolate for two weeks after Adelaide's COVID-19 outbreak.

Mr Gutwein announced the initial measures after a cluster of cases in Adelaide grew to 17.

"To anyone who has arrived in Tasmania from South Australia since last Monday, November 9, we would like you today to immediately self-isolate," Mr Gutwein said.

Anyone staying at a home has been asked to isolate there, while people in hotel accommodation were told to remain in isolation and contact the public health hotline.

People arriving on Monday from South Australia or on the Spirit of Tasmania early on Tuesday, or anyone else who had spent time in SA in the past week, are also expected to quarantine on arrival for two weeks.
