Tas MP faces Qld court on weapon charges

Former Tasmanian MP Adam Brooks has faced a Queensland court charged with weapon and other charges. (AAP)

Controversial former Tasmanian Liberal MP Adam Brooks has faced a Queensland court charged with being in possession of a handgun, unauthorised explosives and false drivers' licences.

The former politician and keen target shooter appeared in Redcliffe Magistrates Court on Tuesday after being arrested on weapon and fraud charges last week.

Brooks faced charges of unlawful possession of a category H weapon, unauthorised possession of explosives and dealing with identity items.

The 45-year-old was arrested after authorities received a tip-off and executed a search warrant on a Marine Parade apartment at Redcliffe, north of Brisbane, on May 12.

Police seized the handgun, unauthorised explosives believed to be ammunition and several false drivers' licences.

Brooks was in Queensland seeking medical treatment at the time of his arrest after he resigned one day after being elected to the Tasmanian parliament.

Brooks won the seat of Braddon in the May 1 state poll but resigned before taking office.

In the days leading up to Brooks' court appearance in Redcliffe, Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein confirmed Brooks was in Queensland undertaking treatment for his mental health and was "not in a good space".

The Queensland arrest follows accusations from two women during his campaign of using fake online dating profiles under the name Terry.

Brooks has strongly denied the accusations and flagged legal action against certain people he says have made false claims about his private life.

The former politician has indicated that he intends to fight the Queensland charges.

The matter was adjourned until June 10 for further mention.
