Tas mayor fights misuse of office charges

Former mayor Debbie Lee Wisby has faced court accused of misusing her office. (AAP)

A former mayor on Tasmania's east coast will fight allegations she misused her office and improperly used information to rent her accommodation to two general managers of the same council.

Debbie Lee Wisby, 51, was mayor of the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council for about two years before resigning in 2020 citing health and wellbeing reasons.

It is alleged at separate times between May and August 2019 Wisby rented her accommodation at Triabunna, which is within the council area, to acting general managers Ian Pearce and Harry Galea.

Court documents allege Wisby acquired information that the two men needed accommodation and improperly used that information to gain directly, or indirectly, an advantage for herself or her family.

Wisby received $1800 in council funds for Mr Pearce's stay as well as $1500 for Mr Galea's stay, it is alleged.

Wisby appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to two counts of improper use of information and two counts of misuse of office.

She is expected to reappear in court early next year.
