Tas man shot in chest tried to catch taxi

A man who was shot in the chest has apparently tried to catch a taxi not long after being wounded in northern Tasmania.

The 29-year-old, who is not cooperating with police investigators, is in a serious condition in Launceston General Hospital after the incident in the city's northern suburbs around 6.50am on Monday.

Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Craig Fox said authorities are searching for a male suspect and the gun, and believe more than one person may have been involved.

Insp Fox said the man who was shot came out of a parkland area connecting two streets.

"(The) man presented to a taxi driver ... and had a gunshot wound to his chest," he told reporters in Launceston.

"We believe that he did call a taxi, that's what has been relayed to us. We don't know a great deal ... the victim at this stage hasn't told us who shot him."

Insp Fox said the victim is known to police and there is no danger to the community.

Police earlier this year launched a crackdown on gun crime in northern Tasmania after a spate of shootings in the area.
