A Tasmanian man has pleaded not guilty to murdering a young Queensland mother whose body was discovered at a friend's house.

Gabbie Marshall, 23, was found dead by police in the northwest coastal town of Ulverstone in the early hours of June 15.

She had only been in Tasmania a few weeks and was trying to start a new life.

Colin William Drake, 35, appeared on Thursday in Devonport Magistrates Court via video link and entered a plea of not guilty to one charge of murder.

He remains in custody and will next face court on August 30.

Ulverstone locals held a small vigil the week after the alleged murder of Ms Marshall, who has been remembered by her brother as free spirited.

Police gathered evidence from the home in Ulverstone's Main Street as well a nearby property.
