Tartuffe, Perth

Tartuffe
Tartuffe Photograph: Robert Frith/Acorn Photo

When Molière’s 16th century comedy Tartuffe first opened, it was damned – and banned – as an attack on religious hypocrisy, for its depiction of a man who claimed to speak with divine authority.

Now Kate Cherry directs a riotously irreverent version, adapted from the original French by Justin Fleming for a contemporary Queensland Theatre Company and Black Swan Theatre Company co-production. This Tartuffe poses as a spiritual advisor to wealthy families. He sells salvation to successful, soul-sick socialites and has most of them wrapped around his finger. But not everyone is under his spell.
