Tartan Army hit out at UEFA over Belarus World Cup qualifier ban

Tartan Army chiefs have lashed out at UEFA for banning them from Scotland's crucial World Cup qualifier away to Belarus.

European football's governing body confirmed this week that Scotland's second game in the group would be played in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary, in September.

But while Steve Clarke's side would usually be backed by several thousand fans for an away qualifier, none will be present in the ZTE Arena because the game will be behind closed doors.

UEFA made their decision three years ago to ban Belarus from hosting home games because of their support for Russia in their invasion of Ukraine and also ensured no supporters would be allowed to attend any of their games.

And the Association of Tartan Army Clubs have revealed they tried several routes to persuade UEFA to change their mind.

Martin Riddell, chair of ATAC, said: "It isn't for us to say if Belarus should be part of the qualification process but the fact remains that innocent away fans should not be locked outside when their team play. Football without fans is nothing.

"As soon as the draw was made, we were immediately aware of the implications. These being that Belarus play their home matches in a neutral country behind closed doors as a result of UEFA sanctions.

"We raised this with Football Supporters Europe, who in turn lobbied UEFA, to no avail.

"Ahead of the UEFA ExCo meeting in Belgrade in April this year, we asked the SFA to raise this - specifically the match being behind closed doors for away fans.

"The UEFA response was that nothing had changed since the ban was introduced, so the sanctions remained in place.

"We're mindful too that when Northern Ireland played their match in Belfast, it was at the 11th hour that the Belarusian players and entourage were given the green light to enter the country. This decision was only made about ten days prior to the match."
