Taronga Zoo Sydney has first fur seal pup born for 20 years

A three-month-old long-nosed fur seal pup has made its debut at a zoo in Sydney this week.

Birubi is the first long-nosed fur seal pup to be born at Taronga Zoo in more than 20 years.

She was born on December 21 to first-time mum Keke and according to keepers at the Australian zoo, the pint-sized pup has a very “confident personality”.

“She loves to follow all of us around and is so intrigued by new people and items,” said keeper Lindsay Wright.

“It has been such a pleasure to watch Keke become a mother to Birubi, it is so crucial that they continue to be advocates for their wild counterparts.”

Before coming on to display at the zoo, Birubi and Keke have been spending their time at Taronga’s purpose-built pupping nursery.

The facility has an adjustable floor which allows keepers to lower or increase the depth of water.

It allows seal pups to grow in confidence with swimming before they are exposed to deeper waters.

Taronga Zoo said Birubi joins a number of new arrivals this Easter, including Humphrey the koala joey, a tree kangaroo joey, seven Bolivian squirrel monkeys and Amalie, an Australian sea lion pup.
