Welsh star Taron Egerton missed out on leading actor at the BAFTA television awards 2023, after Ben Whishaw picked up the prize for his role as Adam Kay in This Is Going To Hurt. After the awards, Taron sent Ben a sweet message and admitted he did want to have him rugby tackled.
Posting to his Instagram Taron congratulated Ben and joked that he and fellow nominee Martin Freeman had plans to rugby tackle him. He said: "I suggested to Martin Freeman that when Ben Whishaw would inevitably win for his next level performance in This Is Going To Hurt, we should both rush to the stage, rugby tackle him and split the bafta. Sadly, when Ben's name was called, Martin bottled it like a wimp so Ben walked away with the award. Whatever, Martin."
"11 years ago when I was graduating from RADA Ben came to see one of my final shows. He tapped me on the shoulder afterwards and told me how much he'd enjoyed my performance and was really encouraging at a time when my confidence was low. He was universally revered at the drama school and it meant the world to me. Congratulations, Ben. It's a real privilege to even be mentioned in the same breath as you."
Taron was nominated for the BAFTA for his role as Jimmy Keene in the Apple TV series Black Bird, which he was also an executive producer for. He was born in Birkenhead but moved to LlanfairPG as a child before relocating to Aberystwyth at the age of 12.
