Tariq Lamptey can give Aaron Wan-Bissaka the wake-up call he needs at Manchester United

It's no secret that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn't happy with some of Aaron Wan-Bissaka's performances while he was Manchester United manager.

The Norwegian wanted to sign Kieran Trippier in the summer window but Atletico Madrid's asking price blocked a deal.

Now United are being linked with Brighton and Hove Albion's Tariq Lamptey. The 21-year-old has managed to impress onlookers since joining the south coast club from Chelsea and it is no wonder teams like United are said to be lurking.

When Lamptey enters the field for the Seagulls he shows the desire, effort and attacking talent every supporter craves from their club's full-backs. Can the same always be said for Wan-Bissaka?

No player goes out onto the pitch to purposefully not try their best but perhaps Wan-Bissaka has become a bit too comfortable.

This most likely stems from a lack of real competition for his place in the team.

Diogo Dalot is his nearest rival for that position and he did well when he came in, however in recent weeks, the 22-year-old has not always been a starter under Ralf Rangnick.

Perhaps the German does not see Dalot as an adequate replacement for the Englishman, so where does that leave United at right-back?

Looking at Man City, they have competition for places all over the park including in one of United's many problem positions, through Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker.

If United truly want to be title challengers again they need to start creating competitions for places and making life more uncomfortable for the first-team regulars.

At 21, Lamptey is not the finished product but he almost certainly would give Wan-Bissaka the wake-up call he desperately needs before he becomes yet another costly mistake.
