While many expected the Chicago Bears to struggle against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, this first-half performance by the Bears wasn’t what everyone had in mind — particularly on defense.
The NFL’s best red zone defense gave up three passing touchdowns in the red zone to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. While the Bears are certainly missing the absence of defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, that first-half performance was absolutely inexcusable by this defense.
Meanwhile, the Bears offense had its share of frustrating moments, which included two Mitchell Trubisky turnovers, including a fumble that was returned for a touchdown to put the Packers up 27-3 in the second quarter.
It was the kind of beatdown that appeared headed for a blowout loss that usually gets a head coach and general manager fired. And with another half yet to go, that could still be the case.
While fans were beyond frustrated with Chicago’s horrid play on all sides of the ball, Bears running back Tarik Cohen was also in poor spirits following the first half. He thought that not watching the game would help the Bears play better. But he should know better in this Bears-Packers rivalry.
We’ll see if Chicago can somehow turn things around. But if history — or even this season — has shown us anything, that likely won’t be the case. Best case scenario, the Bears might be able to save this from being an absolute blowout.
