TargetExpress planned for Lakeview

April 23--Target is planning its second smaller-format store in Chicago, at Clark Street and Belmont Avenue, the retailer said Thursday.

The 29,000-square-foot store will open at 3200 N. Clark in Lakeview in October 2016. The new location is set to open one year after the retailer's first TargetExpress in Chicago, planned for Streeterville.

The store, which is less than one-fifth the size of a traditional Target, will emphasize certain "categories," meant to be convenient for neighborhood shoppers to pick up what they need and go, according to spokeswoman Kristy Welker. Categories include beauty, apparel, home decor for smaller spaces and grocery. The location will also offer a pharmacy and in-store pickup, allowing consumers to order goods online and pick them up in the store. Target-exclusive brands such as Mossimo apparel and Archer Farms food products will be emphasized, Welker said.

Target, which ended the fiscal year with 1,790 stores, opened its first Express store in July in its hometown of Minneapolis and last month opened two more, one in downtown San Francisco and the other in Berkeley, Calif. Its small-format openings represent more than half of the 15 store launches Target has planned this year, including the first Chicago location planned for the former Fox Obel space in Streeterville.

"We want to offer a quick-trip shopping experience, catering to guests in that neighborhood," said Welker.
