Targeted retinol dose to do away with the wrinkles

Since the 1970s, retinol has been regarded by dermatologists as the gold standard for treating signs of ageing, yet people shy away from the vitamin A derivative.

Kiehl's has introduced Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum for a precise daily dosage while minimising uncomfortable side effects.

"Vitamin A derivatives have irritant properties due to the rapid acceleration of cell turnover within the skin," explained Kiehl's global consulting dermatologist Dr Meghan O'Brien. "There is a time period known as the retinisation in which it is common for the skin to experience discomforting side effects such as redness, dryness and peeling. This is due to the disruption of the skin barrier. Typically, these effects occur within the first two weeks of using retinol and will subside with continued use."

But as dull dead cells are removed and replaced by fresh cells, the skin will have a healthier appearance. Retinol also offers other benefits in counteracting visible signs of ageing along with promoting a radiant complexion.

"Skin starts to age in our early 20s, with wrinkles, fine lines and discolouration starting to show up around our mid to late 20s. This is usually a good time to introduce retinol into our skincare routine," advised Dr O'Brien.

In most cases, retinol products need to be introduced into skincare routines gradually or at varying strengths to build up the skin's tolerance to the ingredient. Without expert guidance, this process can be confusing, inconvenient, and frustrating for the consumer.

"Our research tells us that for a skincare product to be effective, consistency and compliance are required for results. We wanted to formulate a retinol product that could be used every day from start with minimal discomforting effects, while still offering powerful anti-ageing skin benefits," said Kiehl's global scientific director Nancy Ilaya.

Inspired by the science of "micro-dosing", or the administration of potent ingredients in low and precise dosages, Kiehl's new serum innovatively offers a carefully calibrated dose of pure retinol.

"The formula includes peptides to support and sustain the benefits of retinol and ceramides that release vital skin barrier lipids to help build retinol tolerance and prevent dryness," said Ilaya. "The precise dose of retinol can then be effectively delivered into the skin to begin providing benefits without disrupting the skin barrier."

Kiehl's gentle yet targeted retinol treatment can be used on other areas where signs of skin ageing can appear, including the eye zone, neck, décolleté, and back of hands.
