'Targeted' acid attack leaves two women in hospital with serious burns

Two men are being hunted by police after a horror acid attack left two women with serious burns.

The targeted attack happened just after midnight on Sunday when the men broke a window of a house and threw the acid on the women.

They had arrived at the scene in a small car which was later found burnt out by police.

The vicious attack took place in Motherwell Road, Carfin, North Lanarkshire.

The victims, aged 21 and 42, were rushed to hospital after suffering serious burns to their skin.

They were taken to University Hospital, Wishaw and later released after treatment.

The vehicle thought to have been used by the men was later found by cops burnt out and abandoned in Motherwell.

Police are upping patrols in the area to reassure residents, but they do believe it was a "targeted" attack.

Detective Sergeant Jim Williamson of Wishaw CID said: “We are still working to establish the motive surrounding this attack, however, we believe this was a targeted attack.

"Officers are conducting a number of enquiries in the local area today and the public will see an increased police presence.

“I am appealing for anyone who may have heard or seen anything around the time of the incident which may help with our enquiries, to get in touch.

"We are particularly interested in the movements of the vehicle, believed to be a small hatchback and possibly a Suzuki Baleno.

"If you saw this car in the area last night, or in the days prior to the assault, please come forward to assist our enquiries.”
