We speak to the man behind the cult taps-aff.co.uk weather service

Glasgow's in the midst of a mini (but powerful) heatwave. We're being treated to glorious sunshine and temperatures as high as 25C.

And it's come just in time for the Scottish Government's easing of lockdown restrictions, meaning we're now allowed to sunbathe in public spaces such as parks. So it's safe to say - Glasgow is basking.

And when Glasgow is basking, there's only one thing for it. Taps aff.

So as we slap on the factor 50, who better to speak to than Glasgow based programmer and website designer Colin Waddell, the brains behind the phenomenon that is the Taps Aff weather service.

In response to the popularity of the site, he told Glasgow Live: "When the weather is rubbish a couple of thousand people use the site as their source of the weather, when it's sunny that'll jump up to ten's of thousands of users. A couple of years back I passed the "million users" milestone which was mental!"

"I've worked on millions of daft wee projects like this over the years that have gone nowhere (like a site to tell you if you should walk the dog now or hold back for impending better weather), so having something that people keep coming back to and telling others about is amazing.

Started in 2012, it is billed as Glasgow’s 'premier' website and provides a single (critical) observation to keep the general public informed - is it Taps Oan or Taps Aff?

Illustrated by some simple weather icons, the handy weather service gives us both a real-time status and future forecast for the coming days ahead - and its even been extended to show the weather in places across the UK.

And in response to the million dollar question of whether he himself whips goes bare-chested when the mercury rises, he replied:

"There's a time and a place for taking your top off and for me personally that time is "rarely". I spend far too long behind closed doors writing software for the space industry for my pasty white shoulders to deal with the sun.

"I'll never get in the way of someone having a good time though - so if you think the world needs to see your sweaty torso then batter in!"
