Taoiseach to seek recall of Dail early following reopening of schools as pressure mounts over golf event controversy

The Dail is set to be recalled early following the reopening of schools it has been announced.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin along with the Tanaiste Leo Varadkar and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan have all agreed that the Dail should reconvene as schools reopen in the coming days.

An exact date has not been given as to when the Dail will sit again however the three leaders will make the request to Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl on Monday.

The houses of the Oireachtas had not been due sit again for another month following a six week break.

However with schools set to reopen as early as next week it's likely TDs will be back in the chamber much sooner than originally planned.

A statement from the government press office read: "The Taoiseach, Tánaiste, and Minister Eamon Ryan have agreed that the Dail should be recalled following the reopening of schools.

"The Taoiseach will make this request to the Ceann Comhairle on Monday."

Pressure has been mounting on the government following a controversial Oireachtas Golf society event that was attended by a number of high profile politicians and criticism about recent Covid-19 restrictions.

Labour leader Alan Kelly previously demanded the Dáil be recalled to deal with the fallout from the Government’s latest lockdown moves.

The government has been facing massive backlash and public outrage after it emerged that over 80 people attended the plush do in Co. Galway this week, breaching Covid-19 restrictions.

The controversial event led to Agriculture Minister Dara Calleary resigning following his attendance  while the Taoiseach and Tanaiste have mounted pressure on EU Commissioner Phil Hogan to consider his position after he also attended the dinner.
