Taoiseach Micheal Martin tests negative for coronavirus following Covid scare

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has tested negative for Covid-19, it has been confirmed.

A spokesman said Mr Martin got tested today after it emerged that French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for the disease.

The Taoiseach had attended a European Council meeting last week in which President Macron was present.

Mr Martin limited his movements and contacts and got tested immediately today once news came through about President Macron's diagnosis.

A spokesman for Mr Martin confirmed to the Irish Mirror that Mr Martin's test has come back as negative.

Mr Martin had postponed engagements planned for this afternoon.

A spokesman for Mr Martin told earlier told the Irish Mirror that the Taoiseach was limiting his contacts this afternoon following the news of the positive test result for Mr Macron.

They said: "There were a few engagements that we're postponing this afternoon, they've been pushed back.

"He is just limiting himself to making calls but he's not meeting anyone and is limiting his contacts until the result comes back."

Meanwhile Justice Minister Helen McEntee is restricting her movements after coming into "close contact" with someone who has displayed Covid-19 symptoms.

A spokesman for Ms McEntee confirmed to the Mirror: "The Minister is restricting her movements due to being a close contact of someone who is going for a Covid test after displaying symptoms."

Ms McEntee recently announced she is expecting her first baby.
