Taoiseach Micheal Martin sends message to young people after alarming coronavirus spike

The Taoiseach has told young people they can still have a good time without "putting themselves in harms way".

Micheal Martin said at a press conference today that house parties and indoor gatherings are becoming an issue around the country.

All of the 23 coronavirus cases confirmed on Thursday were in people under the age of 45.

The Taoiseach has asked the young generation to continue practicing social distancing as we move towards phase four.

Mr Martin said: "Young people have had a very difficult summer and a very difficult couple of months., the leaving cert, the whole change in universities, there’s been a lot of transformation, the fact they couldn’t get abroad this summer.

“We have to take all that into account, that said, the same advice applies to young people as everyone else.

“The indoor gatherings are a problem, overcrowded house parties are a problem.

“No one is invincible.

“With clever precautions young people can still enjoy themselves without putting themselves in harms way.”

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly added that people "can go out and have a good time" this weekend but need to follow the rules.

Face masks will now also be compulsory on public transport from Monday.

Measures were introduced two weeks ago but the rule will now be enforced from Monday.
