Taoiseach Micheál Martin has wished US President Donald Trump ll the best in his battle against Covid.

It was confirmed in the early hours of this morning that the President and his wife, the First Lady, Melania Trump, had tested positive for Covid-19.

They were tested after the President’s aide, Hope Hicks, came down with the virus on Wednesday.

Mr Martin said in a Tweet: “Wishing @POTUS and @FLOTUS a full and speedy recovery from coronavirus.

Earlier, speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland, Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly wished the US President a “speedy recovery,” while adding that he “wouldn’t wish it on his worst enemy.”

He said “I’ll keep my political views completely out of this.

“But absolutely, I wish anybody well who has contracted this virus.

“It’s a vicious, vicious virus and you know, there are some people who think they’ll get the virus and maybe it won’t affect them in a serious way, but when this virus takes hold of you, the damage it can do is very profound and obviously it can lead to death.

He added: “I wouldn’t wish this virus on my worst enemy and I wish everyone who has the virus, including the US President the very best and a speedy recovery.”
