Taoiseach Micheal Martin's message to Dr Tony Holohan ahead of his return

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has welcomed the news that Dr Tony Holohan will be returning to his role next week.

Dr Holohan had taken time of to care for his sick wife but will be back in his position from next Monday.

The Taoiseach has also thanked Dr Ronan Glynn for his work in the meantime.

Mr Martin tweeted: " As Dr Tony Holohan @CMOIreland prepares to return to post, I want to thank Dr Ronan Glynn for his extraordinary service, dedication and honesty over last few months as Acting CMO. 

"He’s been a pleasure to work with, in some difficult circumstances, making v difficult decisions."

Speaking earlier Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said: "Of course I welcome back Dr Tony Holohan.

“He did an extraordinary job and became a national hero when Covid arrived, before Covid arrived as well.

“I think Dr Glynn has done incredibly well in stepping into that role and I very much look forward to working with Dr Glynn and Dr Holohan.

“Quite frankly, the more expertise, the more public health doctors, the more experience we have here helping the country helping the country through this winter, this Covid winter, the better.”
