Taoiseach Micheal Martin's account quickly deletes tweet about US president elect Joe Biden after error

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has caused a storm on social media after his account posted a tweet in error saying he has spoken to President-Elect Joe Biden.

Mr Martin's account said in a now deleted tweet: “Just finished a very positive call with US President Elect @JoeBiden”

However, the tweet was swiftly deleted.

When contacted a spokesperson for the Taoiseach said the tweet was sent in error.

But confirmed that a phone call with Mr Biden is being arranged.

Minutes later, Mr Martin took Leaders’ Questions in the Convention Centre, where the Dáil is currently sitting.

He welcomed Joe Biden’s victory staying he'll be "the most Irish of Irish Presidents since JFK.”

Unfortunately for Martin it did not take long for an onslaught of social media users who spotted the error and have since taken to making jokes about the cock-up.

The Taoiseach previously said Biden “is as Irish as you can get” having met him while Minister for Foreign Affairs.

He said: “He’s as Irish as you can get in terms of his background and he is very proud of that.

“And I think from the Irish perspective that relationship with America is key.

A government spokesperson said Taoiseach Micheál Martin is expected to speak to President-Elect Joe Biden later this evening.
