Taoiseach Micheal Martin responds after Dr Ronan Glynn comments on lockdown restrictions continuing into summer

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he will give the Irish public an update on "how we see April panning out" before April 5.

The Fianna Fail leader added that he understands that people are "fed up" of lockdown restrictions but wouldn't get drawn into speculating about lifting certain measures, RTE reports.

Mr Martin was responding to comments made by Deputy CMO Dr Ronan Glynn, who said last night that restrictions may continue until June.

Speaking in Cork today, he added: "We do understand and get it that people are fed up.

"I am not going to speculate, but we will give people clear indications in advance of April 5 as to how we see April panning out and I don't believe in speculating beyond that."

Mr Martin added that Covid-19 variants, such as the Kent B117 variant in the UK, as well as the Manaus, Brazil variant and the South African variant, were of concern as they were "more transmissible and more deadly".

He added on the AstraZeneca vaccine, approved as "safe and effective" by the European Medical Agency yesterday, that a decision on resuming its use would be made later today and the HSE was "gearing up" for such a move.

Asked whether he would take the Astra Zeneca vaccine, Mr Martin said: "Yes I would, I would indeed.

"I expect a decision will be made today in relation to that. We're gearing up in terms of resuming that."

Mr Martin was speaking at the Port of Cork on Friday as he announced €405 million funding for regeneration projects in Cork city and county.
