Taoiseach Micheal Martin gives update on 'wet pubs' opening timeline as he's confronted by angry publicans

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said ‘wet pubs’ will receive guidelines around how to reopen “shortly.”

Mr Martin also spoke to publicans from Co Monaghan who travelled to Dublin in a bid to hear when they can reopen their pubs again.

One publican Noel McNally said he is “broke” and has had to borrow money from family to keep afloat.

But he said the Taoiseach gave them no definite indication on a date for when they could be back in business.

Mr Martin confirmed to the Irish Mirror that publicans will receive this guidance “shortly.”

He said the framework will include “conditions” and said this would be included in the new plan to live with Covid-19 which is due out “in the middle of September.”

He said:  “As a government we do want to open up other sectors of the economy that remain closed including pubs.

“And at the moment guidance is being worked on..in relation to conditions that would apply in the event of pubs reopening so that guidance is being worked on and will issue.

“But as always we will be guided by public health advice.

“The guidance will involve conditions..to protect lives and people’s health.”
