Taoiseach Micheal Martin confirms when 5km decision will be made and gives update on staycation hopes

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has confirmed that the 5km travel limit will be one of the first restrictions they look at lifting in early-April.

Speaking on Spin South West this morning, the Fianna Fail leader refused to be drawn on exactly what changes will be made - but hoped that would be one of the first to lift.

He told Spin's Ed Roche and Valerie Wheeler on Fully Charged: "We will meet on the week of the 5th of April and see what we can do. And that's why March is so important in bringing down the numbers and giving us options.

"I do understand that 5km is very restrictive.

"I think if we can keep to get the numbers down...that will give us good options in April."

The Taoiseach was also asked about staycations and if people should begin booking their breaks around Ireland yet.

The Cork native responded: "It is frustrating for people not being able to predict what's happening...we're taking a phased by phased approach."

The country's leader also acknowledged the live entertainment sector has taken some of “the most severest hits since Covid-19” and admitted that it is “a sector that suffers more than most".

In his national address on Tuesday, Deputy Martin expressed similar views on what would reopen first with outdoor activities and sport prioritised.

The Taoiseach said: "So, if we can maintain downward pressure on the disease and keep our numbers low, we will then move into the next phase.

"There are a number of areas where we will be assessing progress when considering what changes may be possible.

"The Government will examine whether it will be safe to begin easing the restrictions on outdoor gatherings; some sporting activities; we will look at the gradual reopening of construction and we would like to move on the 5km limit on non-essential journeys."
