Taoiseach Micheal Martin announcement - everything we expect from pubs and travel to hairdressers and hotels

Taoiseach Micheal Martin will address the nation this evening where he will outline the latest raft of Covid restrictions that will be lifted.

NPHET met on Wednesday to discuss the current Covid situation in Ireland before issuing recommendations to Government.

Cabinet will then meet this morning to finalise plans for lockdown easing.

Mr Martin has promised to give "clarity" when he makes his national address regarding Ireland's summer reopening.

He added that he will deliver a "comprehensive statement" on what's to come in the next month.

Here's what we can expect from the Taoiseach's announcement:

Hairdressers and barbers

It looks likely that the Taoiseach will confirm the return of personal services such as hairdressers, salons and barbers.

Currently these are set to return on a staggered basis from May 4 or May 10.

Non-essential retail

The Taoiseach is also likely to confirm the return of non-essential retail such as Penneys, Brown Thomas and many others.

It's likely that click and collect services will return first while other retail will then also be reopened on a staggered basis.

Pubs and hospitality

While it is very unlikely that pubs will fully reopen in May, there has been some hints that we may get some clarity as to when pubs could return in the summer.

While it has yet to be confirmed, reports last night suggested that people across Ireland will be permitted to return to beer gardens as early as June 7, with the return of outdoor pubs and dining earmarked for that date.

Separately on June 2, hotels and B&Bs are expected to reopen their doors.

No fixed date for indoor dining has been provided but July has been mentioned.

The Taoiseach has also signalled that the Government is examining the return of hotels and B&Bs in June.

Earlier this month, a senior Government source told the Irish Mirror: “June 10th is the date that has been mentioned for hotels (reopening).

“The vaccination programme has been working and it is the plan to continue to progress the reopening of our society."

When asked if the future included plans for hotels, pubs and restaurants, the source added: “Yes, hospitality included.”

Inter-county travel

Speaking on Wednesday, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan hopes inter-county travel will be allowed to happen as soon as the hospitality sector reopens.

Mr Ryan said: "We hope we can get hospitality back in June and domestic tourism can come back. I think that's something we're keen to do. Even that, it could be a staged basis, so it could be outside dining first and then indoor at a later stage.

"The way the numbers are going, they're relatively steady and with the vaccine rollout there's an opportunity to open the country more.

"Included in that will be aviation, we will introduced a mechanism where vaccinated people will be able to avoid quarantine upon their return to Ireland so that'll make a major difference.

"Opening up hospitality goes together with inter-county travel so that'll hopefully be June."

With this in mind it is likely that the Taoiseach will make some form of announcement as to when inter-county travel can return.
