Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Leo Varadkar's latest lockdown reopening comments ahead of announcement

Having already eased a number of restrictions in April, it is widely expected that Ireland will reopen in a major way in May, June and July.

We'll get an idea of how that will look later in the week when it's widely expected that Taoiseach Micheál Martin will address the nation once more.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) are set to meet on Wednesday before making a recommendation to Government that evening.

From there, a Cabinet sub-committee involving the three Governmental party leaders and a number of other ministers will make the decisions, bring them to the full Cabinet on Thursday before Mr Martin addresses the nation that evening.

We have been given a few hints as to what will come.

Speaking on RTÉ's The Week in Politics on Sunday, Mr Martin said the Government will be examining retail, hairdressers, religious services and adult sport training in the coming days and a formal announcement will be made after Cabinet meets on Thursday.

He crucially made the point that this has to be the end of stop-start lockdowns for businesses and the public.

"Anything we open now we want to keep open." he told the programme, adding that 'outdoor' was the theme of the summer.

Meanwhile, speaking on Instagram on Tuesday, Tànaiste Leo Varadkar said that "we'll be able to set out what can open in May and give some indication as to whether things will open in June or July."

He followed that up in the Irish Times yesterday.

"The Government will meet this Thursday to set out a clear plan for easing restrictions in May. There will also be a clear indication of what June and July are going to be like," he said.

"Our absolute goal is to avoid a fourth wave of hospitalisations, and of deaths, in Ireland. The experience from Christmas and the situation in India shows how quickly this virus can take over."
