Taoiseach Leo Varadkar jokes he'll 'stay in garden' this weekend after Phoenix Park sunbathing pictures

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he will stick to the garden this weekend after he was filmed enjoying the sun in the Phoenix Park last Sunday.

The Fine Gael leader made international headlines as he enjoyed the weather with his partner and two friends within 5km from his residence.

And laughing about the incident the Taoiseach said he doesn't want to give his press officer another heart attack.

Speaking on FM104's Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Taoiseach said: "Unfortunately there are camera phones anywhere there are people these days, that's the way it is.

"You have to live your life and if you're afraid of photographs you'll never leave your house.

"I think I'll stay in the garden this weekend, don't want to give my press office a heart attack."

Mr Varadkar was speaking about Ireland's roadmap to recovery and hopes he will be telling all of the country that phase two is going ahead next Friday.

He said Ireland is moving in the right direction but will learn a lot next week.

The Taoiseach said: "Even though we are going in the right direction there are still a lot of people hurting an grieving and a lot of people still stick.

"We are definitely going in the right direction, the plan is working, numbers are improving, still 70 new cases yesterday and 9 deaths but we are not out of the woods yet.

"What we'll do is look at all the data, r number, new cases and that and make a decision next Friday on whether we can move to phase two.

"I think we're on track.

"There is hope(it could be accelerated). We said from day one it could be accelerated if the virus is kept under control. I certainly want to accelerate it.

"The reason we can't make any call on this yet is because it's really only two weeks after you relax restrictions you know whether the virus is spreading again or not.

"It's really the numbers next week that will tell us."
