Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has decided on a General Election date, but has 'unfinished business' first

Leo Varadkar has revealed that he has already decided on a date for a General Election.

But the Taoiseach explained that he will not disclose the chosen date until at least after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, saying he has some "unfinished business."

Mr Varadkar held a meeting with Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin last week to discuss a date, and wishes to meet him again in the coming days, he told RTE's 'This Week.'

It is thought that the Dail will be dissolved before it has the opportunity to debate a motion of no-confidence in Health Minister Simon Harris, a vote which the government would be likely to lose.

Massive momentum is leading towards a snap election being called in the coming days for early February - with the Irish Mirror understanding that February 7th is the preferred date.

It comes after Labour leader Brendan Howlin told the Irish Mirror that “the time is now” for an election to give the people the choice.

And he said that there’s no point “limping on with a pretend parliament” over the coming months until the Taoiseach’s preferred election day in May.

He was scathing of the Government’s disastrous performance in areas like housing and health and he said he believes the people now want to “pass judgement” on Fine Gael.

Mr Howlin said that in particular Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Housing Minister, Eoghan Murphy and Health Minister, Simon Harris, had been “complete failures” in their jobs.

The Labour leader said the “Tory Boys” have never understood what it was like to be a normal working person in the country with all the struggles it brings.
