Tanked-up yob showered homophobic abuse on staff at Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital

A tanked-up yob showered homophobic abuse on A&E staff who were trying to help him.

Darren Grainger, 54, targeted medics at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, with hateful slurs as they attempted to treat him following his admission for being intoxicated through drink.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Grainger was taken by ambulance to the busy casualty department at 6pm on February 19 amid concerns for his health.

Procurator fiscal depute Kirsten Brierley said: “The accused was taken to the hospital due to his level of intoxication.

“He was admitted for observation and a member of staff attended to carry out routine checks.

“The accused became abusive. He told the witness to ‘f*** off,’ and said, ‘I want to sleep.’

“He was told his language was unacceptable.

“The witness observed the accused had urinated on himself and stated he wanted to help.

“The accused, ‘You are a p***,’ and he added, ‘You are not getting to take my top off. You are going to bend me over.’

“Other witnesses heard the disturbance and attended the cubicle.

“The accused continued to behave aggressively and shouted and swore at witnesses.”

Grainger was placed on a trolley and moved into the corridor at the A&E where he continued to hurl abuse at staff within earshot of patients.

The prosecutor added: “The accused continued to shout ‘F*** you, you c****,’ in the corridor.

“Police were asked to attend found him asleep in the A&E corridor.”

He was not cautioned or charged by cops due to his “level of intoxication.”

He appeared for sentencing on Thursday after pleading guilty to charges of public disorder at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Grainger of Netherhill Road, Gallowhill, admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner where he repeatedly shouted, swore, adopted an aggressive manner and made homophobic remarks to staff working at the hospital.

Defence agent James Arrol confirmed his client was admitting responsibility for the offence at the hearing before Sheriff Colin Pettigrew.

He said: “He is a man who has a short but fairly serious criminal record who was released in 2015.

“His position is that he accepts full responsibility for the offence but he has no recollection of the events.

“However, he is able to understand that staff are there to help people and they shouldn’t have to put up with anything like that.

“He has expressed his remorse and embarrassment and he knows this kind of behaviour cannot be countenanced.”

Mr Arrol added that the court may benefit from a further background report to assess whether Grainger would be able to perform unpaid work in the community as part of his punishment.

Sheriff Pettigrew agreed and ordered a supplementary report and called for a Restriction of Liberty Order assessment.

He told him: “In normal times hospital staff have enough to deal with.

“But during the current pandemic we are well aware of just how difficult the situation is.”

He warned him prison is a possibility but deferred sentencing him September 16, when he will discover his fate.
