Tank contenders separating themselves on Dolphins’ 2019 schedule

The Miami Dolphins’ season is proceeding as expected — Miami has stumbled out the gate to an 0-3 start, their first in nearly a decade. As a result, momentum has continued to build on the Dolphins’ perceived “tank” of the season and the Dolphins are generally regarded as the favorites to finish the NFL season as the worst overall team.

But there’s competition afoot — including from some familiar faces to the Dolphins. Through three games, the Dolphins’ schedule currently holds 5 games against winless teams in the future.

  • Week 6 vs. Washington
  • Week 8 @ Pittsburgh
  • Week 9 vs. New York Jets
  • Week 14 @ New York Jets
  • Week 16 vs. Cincinnati

Here’s the good news for tanking enthusiasts. The Dolphins own the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 1st-round pick this season. So having them as competition for the worst record is a good development. And the Jets will have quarterback Sam Darnold back for both Dolphins contests (hopefully), which should help them rise above Miami in the rankings.

Washington is woefully bad — but even they have just drafted a 1st-round quarterback in Dwayne Haskins, who sits behind Case Keenum and continues to digest the playbook.

Which leaves Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals as the critical game on the schedule, but there’s good news here, too. The Bengals will have to play the Steelers twice, there’s a fair chance they end up winning a few games the rest of the way.

Miami’s most critical games will be the three contests vs. Washington, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. But one week at a time! The Los Angeles Chargers come to town next week and will be looking for a win in the worst way after dropping to 1-2 to start their season.
