Tangle

Theatre tends to run scared of the scientific, but Unlimited Theatre embraces atoms with its art and combines physics with the physical. Its latest show messes around with ideas of probability and quantum entanglement in the story of four people who have all lost someone. If that sounds a little dry and intimidating, the piece also incorporates teleportation and the Wombles, and boasts a quantum physicist announcing matter of factly: "I've seen infinity. It's not that big."

Flora is a ditzy, LA-based dog groomer who has hired private investigator Malcolm to search for her long-lost Uncle Carlos, who was apparently discharged from the army having claimed to have witnessed the teleportation of a US warship.

Armed with information found on the internet, Flora and Malcolm head to Wimbledon, where Carlos was last heard of. There they encounter physicists Jocelyn, who has lost her brother, and Hamish, who has lost his wife. Soon the quartet's lives are entangled in a way no mathematical equation could begin to explain.

Tangle is ambitious and, if anything, tries to stuff too much into a show that resembles a gloriously messy jigsaw, in which some of the pieces fit better than others. A cartoon-style speediness soon gives way to something more reflective, although the cast's penchant for moving furniture around contributes to a feeling that the show lacks elegance and an emotional centre. Not all of the story strands are successful, and the only fully developed relationship is between Jocelyn and Hamish. But the cast work hard to keep you engaged, and the show creates a sense of wonder at the idea that we are all part of each other, whether we find each other or not.

· Until October 6. Box office: 0114-249 6000. Then touring.
