Tanaiste Leo Varadkar gets haircut 'at last' as barbers finally reopen

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar got his hair cut 'at last' today as the barbers finally reopened.

The Fine Gael leader shared an image of his trim as he sat in the barber chair donning a face mask.

Mr Varadkar said: "Lunchbreak haircut. At last! Please support small businesses to help people get back to work. Now at Cabinet to discuss Covid and July jobs stimulus."

There were queues outside several hairdressers and barbers first thing on Monday as people finally got the chance to get their lockdown locks cut.

Dublin barber jokes about opening 'repair shop' as he prepares to open after lockdown lifted

In Athy, Co Kildare, Kathleen Grufferty was one of the first back into the hairdressing chairs at the House of LA salon.

"I'm very excited to be back and feel normal again," she said.

"I was in at 9am this morning, it was great - one of the first."

On a momentous day, pubs serving food are now allowed to trade and sell alcohol, so long as a meal worth €9 is also served.

The Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) said that pubs reopening marked a "milestone moment in the recovery of the country".

The LVA urged publicans to ensure they take responsibility and make sure social distancing guidelines are being met.

"With the public health situation improving, the reopening of pubs will be an indicator of Ireland's emergence from the lockdown," said chief executive of the LVA, Donall O'Keeffe.
