Tanaiste Simon Coveney downplays reports ISIS bride Lisa Smith is returning to Ireland

Tanaiste Simon Coveney yesterday downplayed reports ISIS bride Lisa Smith is due to return to Ireland this weekend.

The 38-year-old former Irish Army soldier from Dundalk is expected to be booted out of Turkey with two-year-old daughter in the next few days.

But Mr Coveney said while the Government is still in contact with Turkish authorities, he gave no clear indication as to when she will arrive.

He said: “I’ve made it very clear in relation to Lisa Smith that this is a consular case – we don’t talk publicly about that.

“There has been a lot of media speculation, some of it inaccurate.

"We’ve been working on this case for some time and we remain in contact with Turkish authorities who have been very helpful. We’ll have to wait and see how it develops.”

It is expected Ms Smith will be detained by gardai once she touches down on Irish soil as sources claim there are enough grounds to do so.

She converted to Islam in 2011 then quit the Air Corps, and in 2015 travelled to Syria through Tunisia.

She escaped from the al-Hawl camp last month following the Turkish invasion and made her way north.

A Turkish-backed militia picked her up and handed her to over to Turkey.
