Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says second coronavirus wave 'started months ago' but gives positive update

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said the second wave of coronavirus started "months ago" but a second wave of death hasn't.

The Fine Gael leader made the statement after 217 new cases were confirmed on Tuesday but no further deaths were announced.

This marked the 10th day in a row that the Republic of Ireland saw zero deaths from the virus.

And the now Tanaiste said this is the trend in all of Europe with the most vulnerable protected.

Mr Varadkar tweeted: "217 positive tests for CoVid reported today but 10 days with no reported deaths. Similar pattern across Europe. Second wave of cases started months ago but at this point there’s no significant second wave of illness, hospitalisation or death.

"We all need to keep following the public health advice so those most vulnerable are protected."

Dr Ronan Glynn also shared a similar message on Tuesday after the highest spike since May as he asked people to keep practicing social distancing.

The Acting Chief Medical Officer said; “While the number of cases today is the highest daily reported figure since May, the five day moving average remains relatively stable at 115 cases per day.

"However, this is still a substantial number of cases and I urge everyone to double down on their efforts now – wash hands regularly, physically distance from others, wear face coverings where appropriate, avoid crowded areas, know the symptoms, isolate and contact your GP if you have any concerns.

“Please continue to reduce your social contacts so that the virus does not get the opportunity to spread further.”
