Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says he'll meet with gardai over leak of confidential contract

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has made contact with the Gardaí in relation to their investigation into his leaking of a confidential Government document.

Pressure has been growing all weekend following the Mirror’s revelations that a senior minister, Simon Harris, has already been interviewed by the guards.

And it was confirmed earlier today that he has submitted a written statement.

The Irish Mirror revealed yesterday that Detectives from the elite NBCI (National Bureau of Criminal Investigation) unit are investigating the alleged leaking of documents by Leo Varadkar when he was Taoiseach in April 2019.

The document in question was a draft copy of the new €210 million GP contract being negotiated between the Government and the IMO (Irish Medical Organisation).

Mr Varadkar provided the document, marked ‘confidential,’ to the head of a rival organisation, the NAGP (National Association of General Practitioners), of which Mr Varadkar’s friend, Dr Maitiú Ó Tuathail was the head.

A spokesman for the Mr Varadkar gave this statement from the Tánaiste to the Irish Mirror: “I am aware that a complaint was made against me last November. This was widely reported at the time. The gardai have to do their job and investigate that complaint. I would expect nothing else.

"They have not been in contact with me about the matter, but I have, through my solicitors, made contact with them and I have offered to meet with them, answer any questions they may have, and provide a full statement on the matter.

"The facts are no different to those set out by me in the Dail last November.

"My legal advice is that I have committed no offence.

"I look forward to the matter being concluded.

"Given the circumstances, I won’t be making any further comment.”
