Tanaiste Leo Varadkar posts pics of candle lit dinner date with partner Matthew Barrett on Instagram

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar posted pics of a candle lit dinner date with his partner Matthew Barrett on Instagram.

The former Taoiseach took to social media to give his followers a glimpse into his private life, and to show that between Dáil debates and press conferences, he's just a normal human like the rest of us.

The pair tucked into a lovely steak dinner, and Leo posted snap of their dishes on his story, along with the wine they were drinking in a second photograph.

He captioned the picture in Irish writing: "Bosca dinear as 'ceann amhain (uno mas) don deireadh seachtaine An-bhlasta ar fad."

The caption translates loosely to "One dinner box for the whole weekend, very tasty" in English.

The Tanaiste also recently spoke to Mary McAleese on RTE's All Walks of Life recently.

Leo opened up about swapping the single life for being in a committed relationship.

Varadkar and his partner Matt have been together since 2015, although they are not yet married.

He admitted that being in a long term romance changed his view on work and life balance.

"I liked being just me, living alone, being totally committed to work and not understanding why people weren't 100 percent committed the way I was," he told Mary McAleese.

“That does change. You do need somebody who you go home to sometimes, who you know is unconditionally on your side."

Leo also said that Matt wanted to separate his own personal life from Leo's very public one.

As former leader of the country, and now deputy leader, Leo Varadkar is often in the public domain.

"Matt stays out of politics but that was one of the few things that he really wanted to do," Leo said.
