Tanaiste Leo Varadkar leaves social media baffled as he shares video inside home

Social media was left baffled last night after Leo Varadkar shared a video from inside his home.

The Tanaiste was explaining the Government advice on "restricted movements" that he is currently required to follow after being in close contact with a confirmed coronavirus case.

However it was not the message itself that provoked a big reaction on social media, but the fact the Fine Gael leader delivered his public service announcement in front of an array of fridge magnets.

In particular, one that appeared to show Chinese communist revolutionary Mao Zedong caused a big stir.

One journalist joked: "Does Leo Varadkar have a fridge magnet of Chairman Mao? Is he now a Maoist? We should be told."

And a social media user added: "I can't focus as I'm fascinated by your fridge magnets."

While another said: "I have to say I'm surprised, never had Leo down as someone who'd have a collection of magnets on the cooker hood."

Mr Varadkar is currently working from home after a colleague working in his department tested positive for Covid-19.

He told Today with Claire Byrne last week: "One of the people I work with, one of the officials in my Department, unfortunately had symptoms and did the right thing, stayed at home, got a test and tested positive.

"Because we had been working closely together I am now required to restrict my movements.

"I have tested negative so there's no consequences for anyone who has been in contact with me but the rules are the rules so I have to work from home for the next while.

"I have to do so for up to 14 days, but there is a derogation for essential workers, healthcare workers and others, so I might be able to avail of that after seven days if I get a third negative test, but as far as my diary people are concerned it's working from home for 14 days."
