Tanaiste Leo Varadkar hopes to hit a nightclub before Christmas if Ireland's Covid-19 situation improves

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said he hopes to hit a nightclub before Christmas if the Covid-19 situation improves.

Mr Varadkar also suggested the extra Bank Holiday will be either in February or March.

When asked if he would go to a nightclub on Friday night, Mr Varadkar said he didn’t plan to but added: “I don’t plan to, but I’d hope sometime this side of Christmas, if things improve, that it would be possible.

"I’m not going to tell people what they should or shouldn’t do, that's not the right message at the moment.”

He warned people not to go to a club if they have any Covid-19 symptoms or if they are unvaccinated.

He advised people to wear a mask where it’s appropriate and told clubbers to consider taking an antigen test too.

When asked about when the Bank Holiday will likely be, Mr Varadkar said: “It’s still under consideration.

“I think it’s fair to say it’s not going to be this year because the pandemic is still raging.

“I think we have this additional public holiday we’ll have to give people notice so they can organise their shift patterns, book a weekend away, whatever they want to do.

“What’s still under consideration is February or a double bank holiday in March, but no decision has been made on that.”
