Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has message for college applicants as CAO offers released

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has urged college applicants not to worry if they don't get their desired course today.

CAO offers are out this afternoon with thousands of students set to learn their college fate.

And the Fine Gael leader told his Twitter followers that there are many options even if you don't get accepted to your desired course.

Mr Varadkar said: "Good luck to everyone getting CAO offers today. If you don't get your choices, don't worry. 

"Life is full of opportunities - apprenticeship, work exp, gap year, repeat/take the exam in Nov. I got the course I wanted but only on re-check. Ended up with a v different career even so."

78,000 students applied to the CAO this year, the majority of whom received calculated grades four days ago.

Out of approximately 58,000 Leaving Certs who sat their course this year, just under 48,000 of whom have applied to a higher education course.

There are 50,000 college places available through the CAO this year.
