Tanaiste Leo Varadkar commends brave gardai injured in Blanchardstown shooting

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has commended the brave gardai who were injured during the horrific shooting in Blanchardstown.

Last night gardai were alerted after gunshots were heard near Whitechapel Grove shortly after 7 pm.

Officers took cover behind a patrol car as the gunman sprayed bullets at the vehicle.

One of the garda detectives was shot in the foot and the other in the hand.

A man, late 30s, was arrested at the scene of the shootout following extensive negotiations.

The Tanaiste said: "I commend the bravery of the gardai who were injured in the shooting incident in Clonsilla and wish them a speedy recovery. We think of them and their families at this difficult time.

"This shooting was a horrifying incident in a residential area of west Dublin. It must have been terrifying for those living in the area and those passing through.

"I also commend the garda response in bringing this incident under control so swiftly through successful negotiations.

He added: "If you have any information or any footage of this incident, please contact Blanchardstown Garda Station.

"My colleague Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys is absolutely right when she says we must always remember that in wearing the uniform and serving the Irish people, members of An Garda Síochána place our protection and their duty to the State above their own safety."

Taoiseach Micheal Martin expressed his shock at the incident and said he was "deeply concerned" for the officers.

He said: "I was shocked and deeply concerned to learn that two gardai were injured in the course of their duties this evening.

"I wish both gardai a swift and full recovery, and I thank them for their service on behalf of the public.

"This incident in Dublin shows yet again the danger An Garda Síochána often face in their efforts to protect and serve the people.

"We should always be very grateful for all the work they do on a daily basis on our behalf."

The gunman is believed to have opened fire from his window in West Dublin – as a family member was understood to have been held hostage.

It’s believed a relative arrived at the scene in a bid to end the stand-off and recover the weapon while specialist negotiators pleaded with the suspect for two hours.

Both gardai are currently receiving medical treatment at Connolly Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The Garda Commissioner and the acting Justice Minister have praised the brave officers who responded after two gardai were injured.

Harris said: "I want to commend all the Gardaí involved in securing a successful outcome to this firearms incident.

"In particular, the bravery of the two detectives who were first on scene. This was another in a long line of examples of Gardaí putting themselves on the line to keep people safe. I want to wish them a speedy recovery."

Minister Heather Humphreys also commended the officers and urged anyone with information to contact Blanchardstown Garda station.

She said: "My thoughts are with the two members of An Garda Síochána who sustained injuries while responding to an incident in Blanchardstown this evening, and with their families.

"I have been in contact with the Garda Commissioner this evening, and I am relieved to hear that the situation was resolved following negotiation. I want to commend all of the Gardaí who were involved in ensuring there were no further injuries.

"Shocking incidents such as this remind us of the dangers the men and women of An Garda Síochána face every day. We can never take for granted their bravery and the dedicated service they provide to our communities.

"We must always remember that in wearing the uniform and serving the Irish people, they place our protection and their duty to the State above their own safety.

"An investigation into the incident is now underway and I urge any member of the public with any information or footage to contact Blanchardstown Garda Station.”
