Tanaiste Leo Varadkar 'calls for major rule change' as big lockdown decision expected

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar is set to call for the end of restrictions on large outdoor events, which could allow Electric Picnic to go ahead, it has been reported.

A big decision on lockdown restrictions is expected next week as the government announces a roadmap for the reopening of society.

NPHET met on Wednesday to discuss the current epidemiological situation in the country before sending their advice to political leaders.

This will be considered at Cabinet next week before Taoiseach Micheal Martin addresses the nation.

A final decision is expected to be confirmed by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

And Fine Gael leader Varadkar is understood to be in favour of changing rules that prohibit outdoor gatherings.

He will push government colleagues to back a change in the rules when they meet next week, the Irish Independent reports.

It comes as Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said all remaining restrictions are set to be lifted before Christmas - including the reopening of nightclubs.

Minister Donnelly said he believed basic public health measures such as mask wearing would remain in place in high-risk settings for some time and people would be encouraged to continue with cough and hand hygiene.

When asked if he believes all remaining restrictions in place would be lifted before Christmas - including the reopening of nightclubs and the scrapping of a cap on the number of people attending live entertainment events - Minister Donnelly said: “Yes, I do.

“Obviously specific dates are something we will be looking to NPHET for and we’ll be discussing at Cabinet. But certainly yes.

“The view would be that we would be open this calendar year.

“Yes [the] plan is to proceed with the next phase and it’ll be next Tuesday or Wednesday [when the announcement is made].”

Minister Donnelly was speaking at a Covid-19 test centre near Croke Park on Tuesday morning.

He added: “What we would like is a lifting of all restrictions as quickly as possible.

“There may be restrictions that we get public health advice to keep with for some time.

“Will there be, for example, higher risk environments where people should wear masks?

“Should we continue to wash hands and do all of that public health advice.. the basics are things we would want to keep doing.

“We are waiting for public health advice now...what we want to do is provide real certainty for people.

“It’s been a brutal year and a half, most of society and the economy is open and we’re very aware there are some parts which have suffered hugely.

“And [what] we want to do is help them open as quickly as possible and make sure when they do open, that they stay open and give them clarity as to when that can happen so they can plan accordingly.”
