Tanaiste Leo Varadkar and partner Matthew Barrett finally puts up Christmas tree for first time in 16 years

Leo Varadkar has finally put a Christmas tree in his home after living there for 16 years.

The Tanaiste shared a picture of the beautiful tree in his Castleknock home, saying it was a "silver lining" to coronavirus restrictions.

The Fine Gael leader, who shares the flat with his partner Matthew Barrett, revealed he hadn't put a tree up in previous years because he was "never home" on Christmas Day.

But with coronavirus restrictions limiting household visits this year, the Dublin West TD finally took the plunge and put a gorgeous tree complete with baubles, lights and a traditional star on top.

Writing on Instagram, Mr Varadkar said: "Am 16 years in my flat but never got a Christmas tree before.

"Was never home. This year’s been different. Pandemic silver lining."

The lovely post is a far cry from when the former Taoiseach landed himself in hot water when answering a Christmas questionnaire over a decade ago, saying he hated the classic 'A Christmas Carol' because he though disabled Tiny Tim "should get a job".

When asked about his favourite Yuletime song, movie and ad by the Irish Times in 2007, the west Dublin man replied: "Favourite song is Fairytale of New York. Worst is It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - had to listen to the plastic Santa in Crumlin Children's Hospital singing it for a whole month. Damn you, Santa.

"Best movie is Love, Actually - not sure if Hugh Grant would be a good prime minister but he would get into a lot less trouble if he had a driver.

"The Hudsucker Proxy is a great movie, too. Least favourite is A Christmas Carol - Tiny Tim should get a job. Favourite ad has to be the Budweiser ad with the horses.

"It's a pity the horses make the beer too. Coca Cola does great ads. Really like the one with the polar bears, and Holidays are Coming is a classic."

In the same interview, Mr Varadkar also revealed how his dad locking his keys in the boot of his car led to one of his worst Christmases ever.

He said: "Having to drive from Waterford to Dublin and back when my dad locked his car keys in the boot of his car.

"Working in A&E on Christmas Day for two years in a row in Blanchardstown and Beaumont doesn't bring back good memories."
