Tampa woman accused of slashing neighbor to death with machete

TAMPA, Fla. _ Sarah Kynay Martinez admitted to slashing her neighbor with a machete, causing his death, police say.

Still unanswered is why she struck down 74-year-old Eddie Quezada in his home.

Martinez, 21, was arrested Thursday and charged with first degree murder, armed burglary and attempted robbery with a deadly weapon.

Tampa police went to check on Quezada at his home on the 2300 block of E Liberty St. after they were alerted by a concerned neighbor. They discovered him dead in his home with a number of cuts on his upper body.

The investigation led to Martinez, who lives at 2302 E Liberty and who in the past had borrowed money from Quezada and asked him for help in getting a job, according to police. In an interview with detectives Thursday, Martinez offered inconsistent explanations but ultimately admitted to striking Quezada, police said. The motive remains unclear.

Martinez was arrested Thursday and booked into the Hillsborough County jail early Friday. She was being held without bail.
