Tammy Abraham sent stark Chelsea message by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has told Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham he needs to "step up" this season - and offered some advice on how he can improve his game.

Abraham scored 18 goals for the Blues last season in what was his breakthrough campaign under manager Frank Lampard.

The 23-year-old front man has followed that up with five goals in 15 Chelsea appearances so far this term - three coming in the Premier League.

The England international was unable to find a breakthrough in Sunday's crunch clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge as the game ended goalless.

Abraham received some decent service from Reece James on the right but could not make the most of it on this occasion.

“For me, Abraham has to do better," former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink told Sky Sports.

"James can’t do any better for him, he’s put that ball in the right space. Put your head against it, it doesn’t matter who you are, these are brilliant crosses.

"For a striker, this is what you want, at this moment. These are the moments that are counting for Abraham, where he needs to step up.

"Why is he going to the floor? Stand up, you’ve already done the most difficult thing. Stay on your feet and tap it in. It’s 1-0, it’s always going to be a 1-0 game.

"He’s had three chances where he has to make it his own. He has to improve in those moments."

Hasselbaink added: "He did ever so well when he came in. For half of the season, he was a breath of fresh air, scored lots of goals.

"In the second half of the season, he found it difficult, which is normal because he’s a young boy.

"This season, he needs to step up. At times, I think he can do better, with his stature, his ability, he should do better and score more goals - score more important goals.

"Sometimes I wonder if he watches clips of himself after a game because certain times, his movement should be better. His holding up can be a little bit better.”
