Tammy Abraham rescued a point for Chelsea deep into stoppage time at West Brom on Saturday evening, after his side had earlier been three goals down.
A second-half fightback saw Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and then Abraham haul the Blues back on terms for an eventful 3-3 draw at the Hawthorns, after a first 45 minutes littered with defensive mistakes.
The striker wasn’t pointing fingers at the defence, though, as he acknowledged that Chelsea had chances at the other end which weren’t taken, too.
And he revealed Frank Lampard’s main job at the break, with Chelsea three goals down, was one of motivating and preparing the side mentally after falling so far behind.
“I had a big chance first half. Someone at my level should take those chances, while they scored from every shot," he told Sky Sports at full-time.
“We had to keep going and not drop our heads. [The manager] had to lift us up, he said we don’t look like a team ready for the second half.”
Abraham also noted that the mistakes which led to goals need to be halted, not just from the back four but throughout the entire team - and, also as a team, they have to continue to push and improve one another as they did after the break.
"At our level we shouldn’t make those errors but we’re still a work in progress.
"I knew we’d get a few chances; we kept going even though it looked impossible.
“We need to cut out the mistakes as a team, not just defenders. We need to be strong and keep encouraging one another.”
