Tammy Abraham fulfils Roma promise after Europa Conference League triumph

Tammy Abraham vowed to help Roma reach a final and claim silverware when he signed from Chelsea in the summer - and it hasn't taken him long.

The forward was Jose Mourinho's marquee signing almost 12 months ago and the Englishman arrived in the Italian capital with big aspirations. Last night Roma claimed the first ever Europa Conference League, beating Feyenoord in the final thanks to a Nicolo Zaniola goal.

Before that the club's last piece of silverware had come in 2008 courtesy of the Coppa Italia. Roma have been unable to challenge domestically but have got the job done in Europe, beating Brendan Rodgers' Leicester City to reach the final. Abraham has been their go to man in front of goal, scoring 27 times this term, and although he didn't find the net in the final he delivered on his vow.

“One thing I said when I came here was I was going to help the team get to the final and one day I want to win a trophy. In my first season I have achieved that,” he told BT Sport.

“Credit to my team-mates, excellent performances. We deserve it. We have worked hard all year. I love them (the fans). From day one I came here it has been the best. We are champions, I am happy to be a part of the team, now it is time to celebrate and enjoy.

"Even when I first came to the club it had been a long time since they won a trophy, you can hear the fans. We knew how much it was going to mean, you can see we've got some of the best fans."

Abraham's compatriot Chris Smalling was named man of the match and said after the game: "We knew how much it was going to mean to everybody in Rome, and you can see how together we are, everybody fought until the end.

"We had to do that on a few occasions this year (fighting hard), we dropped a bit deeper than we maybe wanted to but we knew we had to do everything. You could see, strikers running back, everybody defending and we knew we had to win."

Mourinho has picked up trophies for two decades now and revelled in the celebrations. He's into his first year in the Italian capital and has shut down any talk of him leaving the Stadio Olympico. A national job has been touted as has the Newcastle United post.

He said: "Now I am staying, there are no doubts. Even if some rumours emerge, I only want to remain at Roma. We must understand what our owners, who are fantastic people, want to do next season, because this is history."
