Tammy Abraham backed to be the new Didier Drogba at Chelsea following brace vs Sheffield United

Former Leeds and Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell has claimed that Tammy Abraham has the potential to be “one of the best strikers in England”, whilst comparing him to former Chelsea goalscorer Didier Drogba.

The 21-year-old has scored four goals in four games so far this season, adding to his tally with a brace against Sheffield United on Saturday.

He also bagged two in his last game away at Norwich, where the Blues ran out as 3-2 winners at Carrow Road.

And Kewell, who made 274 Premier League appearances during his career, expressed his delight at the young Chelsea striker’s performance.

He said on Goals on Sunday: “Hats off to him but hats off to Frank [Lampard] as well. After the stick he got when he missed the penalty (in the Super Cup final), he’s come back and he’s on fire at the moment.

“That’s four goals now. There’s huge potential in this young player and it’s great to see young players getting a chance.”

And, when presenter Alex Scott asked him whether Abraham could be as good as former Blues legend Drogba, Kewell agreed, adding that he thinks that the England U21 international has huge potential.

“I think he can - he’s got the height, he’s got the pace,” he said. “He’s lacking a bit of strength at the moment but, when he gets that, there’s no reason why this boy can’t be one of the best strikers in England.

“He’s taking chances and he’s hitting the target. He’s not missing them, he’s not scuffing them, he’s hitting the target. For me, I think he’s got a bright future.”

Drogba, who played against Kewell during their spells in the Premier League, scored over 150 goals at Stamford Bridge across nine years at the club, whilst winning four Premier Leagues and a Champions League.
