Tamil Nadu: Woman says cops made her clean station in lieu of bribe in Thirumangalam

CHENNAI: Thirumangalam allwomen police are in trouble after forcing a woman to clean up the police station premises as she didn’t have money to bribe them. The woman had filed a complaint against her second husband for sexually harassing her daughter.

The issue came to light after the woman Kavitha (name changed) filed a complaint at the police commissioner’s office on Monday. The petition was forwarded to the Anna Nagar DCP for further investigation. Kavitha lived with her nine-year-old son and a 13-yearold daughter along with her mother and brother at a rented house in Vanagaram, after the demise of her first husband.

She befriended van driver Karpagakani, who works at a school where her daughter studied in Vanagaram. She married him and was living with the driver in a separate house. Last year, Karpagakani took her son and daughter to a lake near Thiruverkadu on the pretext of teaching them swimming. Kavitha’s complaint said he touched her daughter inappropriately and sexually abused her later.

Following this, Kavitha lodged a complaint against her husband Karpagakani, following which a case against Karpagakani was registered under the Pocso Act on August 19.

As police didn’t initiate any further action, Kavitha visited them to inquire about the case. The cops demanded her to pay Rs. 5,000 as bribe, which she did not have. The cops then demanded her to clean the police station premises if she wanted any progress in her case.

A probe is on.
