CHENNAI: S Balasubramaniyan and V Seenuvasan, colleagues at an IT firm in Perumbakkam, were sipping tea at a shop near their workplace on Saturday night when they saw a few pieces of gold jewellery on the road.
They collected the two rings, a bracelet and a chain and handed them over to the Perumbakkam police station and received a pat from the law enforcers. The valuables were returned to their owner on Monday morning.
The two young software engineers were returning home after work when they stopped for their favourite cuppa at 8.30pm and noticed a ring on the ground. They first thought it was imitation stuff but they saw the other gold pieces a few inches away. “We decided to refrain from touching the gold when we saw a ‘thayathu’ (pendant), as we suspected that someone could have performed black magic and threw the jewellery to divert us,” said 24-year-old Balasubramanian.
Seenuvasan, 25, thought that someone was playing a prank and looked around to check once. Later, they checked with employees of a nearby shop but found no answer. They then decided to hand over the jewellery to the tea shop workers and clicked a photograph of handing over the gold as proof.
They asked the tea shop staff to hand over the gold to the rightful owner if he/she came in search and went home. They also gave their contact numbers to the staff at the tea shop and asked them to call if someone came in search of the gold.
But, they remained restless and were worried if the jewellery would be handed over to the rightful owner. So, they returned to the shop, took back the gold and handed it over to personnel at the Perumbakkam police station.
“We took some effort to hand it over to the owner as he was sure to have bought it from his hard earned money,” said Seenuvasan.
On Monday morning, the owner came to the shop looking for the jewellery and was directed to the police station. He told the personnel that he had removed the jewellery to wash his face and hands at the tea shop and kept it in his pocket when he accidentally dropped it while taking out a mask from his pocket. He also asked the police personnel to convey his thanks to the two young men for returning his valuables.
