TRICHY: A special sub-inspector of police attached to Navalpattu police station in Trichy district was hacked to death by two men in the early hours of Sunday. The incident happened when SSI S Boominathan, 50, on patrolling duty, was chasing the two men travelling on a motorbike with a goat, police said.
Boominathan, along with another policeman, was on patrolling duty at 2.30am on Sunday when he spotted two unidentified men on a motorbike carrying a goat. Suspecting that they might be goat thieves, Boominathan attempted to intercept them. But they did not stop and fled.
Boominathan began to chase them on his bike while the other policeman was following him on his two-wheeler. The gang was heading towards Keeranur on Trichy-Pudukottai road.
When they neared Palathupatti village near Kalamavur railway gate near Keeranur in Pudukottai district, Boominathan caught hold of the two men on the bike with a goat. They suddenly attacked Boominathan with sharp weapons and fled the scene. The SSI suffered deep injuries on his head and died instantly.
By the time his associate reached the spot, Boominathan had died due to the injuries, police said. Extending his condolences, chief minister M K Stalin announced Rs 1 crore aid to the bereaved family and assured a government job to one of the family members.
Trichy central zone DIG A Saravana Sundar told TOI that the two men attacked the special sub-inspector. The policeman trailing Boominathan had reached the spot a few minutes late, said the DIG.
"Further investigations are on and four special police teams have been formed headed by DSPs to nab the culprits," the DIG said.
